Community, Connection, and Orange & Blue: My Capital Pride 2026 Weekend

Undeniable energy sweeps over D.C. streets during Capital Pride. A weight was momentarily lifted during fabulous celebrations on Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21.Thousands of people basking in apologetic authenticity have that effect. Uniting like that wasn’t just about having a good time. It was a powerful reminder of what happens when people refuse to hide.

Every wave, every cheer from the sidelines, and every shared smile felt like a collective statement: we are here, we belong, and we aren't going anywhere.

The vibe shifted from the parade route to the Capital Pride Festival, where I represented the University of Illinois Pride Alumni Network. A once-closeted student standing there as an out-and-proud Illini was a full-circle moment. 

Connecting with fellow alumni, current students, and local allies reminded me of the enduring power of our community.

Bringing that orange-and-blue representation to the heart of the District was about more than school spirit—it was about visibility. 

It’s vital for the next generation of queer leaders to see that they have a legacy behind them and a network waiting for them.

The celebration might be a yearly event, but the work of building community happens every single day. Let's keep that momentum going in our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and our communities. Keep showing up, keep connecting, and keep pushing for the fairness and dignity everyone deserves.
